Dual Immersion Education

Students will be taught in English and Spanish, creating an environment where they will become fluent and graduate bilingual, opening many opportunities for the student to succeed.

After School Programs-Domestic and Abroad

Foreign projects will provide students with the opportunity to learn English.  Domestic projects provide a safe place to go after-school where sports and/or life skills are taught and practiced.

Crops and Animals

As part of self-sustainability, our goal is to teach the children to care for the crops and animals, which will provide food, instill a strong work ethic and provide a means of income, giving them something to be proud of. As they sell the produce, eggs and meat, it will teach economics, marketing, and negotiating skills, and give the children who care for the crops and animals money to put in their savings accounts.

Hands-On, Experiential Learning

Everyone learns better by doing, especially children with busy little bodies. We intend to create fun ways to learn as much as possible, keeping the children engaged in learning and increasing the retainment of concepts and facts. This will include field trips to visit various parts of Peru. These children live in a country with a fascinating ancient culture that is their heritage. We want to give them the opportunity to experience the fullness of their cultural heritage and history they came from and how it has affected their modern culture.  We have found these children love logic puzzles and riddles. What a great way to tap into different parts of their brains by teaching them the joy of puzzles, logic puzzles and creative problem solving activities that teach critical thinking skills.

Completely Free

There are many children who cannot afford to go to school and trying to get their school expenses covered puts a financial strain on the families. In 2016, we helped 17 children purchase their school uniforms and supplies so that they could attend school.  In 2017, we provided full sponsorships for 15 students to receive a quality, private school education at our school, Mis Manos Montessori, in Huanchaco.  The families of these children have expressed immense gratitude and joy for this opportunity.

MoneyMatch

This is a savings program we will offer our students. These children have no concept of the value of money. They have never had much, and when they get a little, they tend to spend it on junk food. We want to show them the value of saving their money by opening a savings account for each child who wishes to participate. For every sol they put in savings, NAFE US will match it quarterly.

For example, if a child gives 5 soles in a quarter, they will have 10 soles with our match.  If they give another 5 soles the next quarter, making it 15 soles total, we will match the total, giving them 30 soles. This is not a lot of money in most currencies, but to these children, it will be very reinforcing to choose to save rather than spend as they can easily see how their money is growing.

This money will be available to them only for educational purposes–music or art lessons, sports teams, college etc.–and using it will need to be approved by a director to ensure the money is going to meet the educational needs of the child. For more information on our MoneyMatch program, email, rise.up@nafe-us.org.

What We Need to Build a School

Teachers

If you have your teaching certificate and are willing to commit at least half a school year to these children (March-July; July-November), send us your resume with a cover letter to volunteer@nafe-us.org

In your email, please include:

  • Why you want to serve the children;
  • What you hope to give (i.e. unique talents, abilities, educational emphasis etc.)
  • And what you personally hope to gain from the experience.
A Project/Volunteer Coordinator

A person willing to volunteer for three to six months and oversee the volunteers and activities of a particular project.  We have needs for a project coordinator at The Amaru Project in the highlands of Peru, as well as a volunteer coordinator at our school on the beach in northern Peru.  If a volunteer wanted to spend three months at each project, that is an option as well.

For more information about these positions, visit our Volunteer page

Volunteers

To offer support to teachers in the classroom and work at the after-school program.

Supplies for Learning Projects and Activities

For our Peruvian projects, we would like to purchase supplies as much as we can in Peru. This supports its economy and helps us avoid having to get the supplies to Peru, which is an odyssey to say the least. Your donation to NAFE-US is invaluable and will help us purchase these supplies.

For our domestic projects and partnerships, we can always use fun, innovative supplies to create activities designed to build:

  • Critical thinking skills
  • Creative problem solving
  • Teamwork and cooperation
  • Communication and social skills
  • Confidence and self-esteem

Help Us Build a Library

100% of the proceeds from our merchandise go to the building of a library and the purchase of books and puzzles. The children love to read and be read to.  They can’t get enough of puzzles and they are so good for their brains!

Funds for Facilities

The funds raised in 2016 have allowed us to sponsor 15 new students in 2017 and bring in an English teacher to develop the English program, which is benefiting all the children at Mis Manos Montessori.  We are really excited about this!  However, now our school is at max capacity.  There are many, many children eager for the opportunity to come to our school and receive a quality education.  There is only one way to solve this.

We’ve gotta add another building.

We have the land.  We just need funding for the facilities.  The cost of building facilities that would allow us to teach full classrooms from pre-k to graduation is $100,000.  The annual expense of running the school and sponsoring the students will be $40,000.  There are several options of how to support us.
